Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales Are Real
by Kim Harrington ~ 9/29/2002
"Once upon a time, there lived three good witches. Together these
sisters combined to form the most powerful magical force the world had ever
seen. Others were threatened by them and would stop at nothing to break
their power, so the witches were always in danger. But each time an
evil would challenge them, difficult as it often was, the sisters always
prevailed. Through the strength of their bond, the power of their magic,
and the help of their friends the Charmed Ones fought for good and
won."
So there you have it, the abridged version of the fairy tale of the
'Power of Three.' In our Charmed universe, it's not at all unreasonable to
think that someday the 'Book of Shadows' will be sent to the cavern of
fairy tales to be protected by the Keeper. Long after the Power of
Three is gone, the stories will be told. And although they will change with
each telling, the core will remain the same. The moral that would
state, 'the strongest good that can overcome any evil, is the bond you
create with family and friends.'
Of course, last night wasn't a defining moment in terms of bonding
together. Indeed it was almost insignificant, in the current scope of
things. But that didn't stop it from being an entertaining display of our
favorite childhood fantasies.
Snow White
The most entertaining aspect of this fairy tale last night was the
Apprentice's smug truthful comments to the Evil Witch. It must have given
him a sense of satisfaction, as it did me, watching her get stunned over
and over again. But when she instructed the Woodsman to bring her the
heart of the one with skin as white as snow, I knew the writers were
having fun with this one. My first thought was 'if only Paige hadn't died
her hair,' of course that thought was quenched when after eating the
apple, she returned to her black locks. But the real humor came when Leo
called Piper to see the seven dwarfs standing at the door. From
volunteering to kiss Paige when no Prince could appear, to quietly wondering
if Piper knew Grams was a wolf, it wasn't a heavy laugh, but a quiet
giggle that kept this story working.
Red Riding Hood
Grams was great portraying the wolf, but why didn't the others see it?
More than once, they questioned the odd comments Grams was making, so
they obviously noticed something was up. With the fairy tale events
unfolding and a trip through the woods that ended in a Red hooded cape,
you'd think they'd be able to put two and two together. Instead, once
again, Leo has shown his ineptitude for perceptiveness. This boy has no
clue. What would he have done, had Piper not blown up the wolf from
inside? Simply stand by while he watches the woman he loves disappear into a
fairy tale book? The broken record in me can't help but continue to
plead for the writer's to stop making Leo such a moron! He's too cute and
has too much potential to be wasted like this.
Cinderella
I'll skip my comments about Phoebe (for now), and let's instead marvel
at having Adam's last name be Prinze. True it was corny, but it was
also perfect in setting the tone early on. And who was Cole suppose to be
in this story? Fairy Godfather anyone? Of course the double meaning of
the word Godfather is not lost on me. Cole does seem to becoming the
Don of the law world in Phoebe's life. Overall though, the Cinderella
fairytale as told last night was lacking a huge piece. namely Cinderella.
Sorry for those Phoebe lovers out there, but last night I would've like
to see Cole vaporize her once and for all. As annoying as she was
with-in the first few seconds of seeing her, she only got worse when she put
on those glass slippers. Could she have been more self-centered and
spoiled? Everything was all about her: about winning this war she's
declared against Cole. Even after Leo told her that Paige was presumed Dead,
she still went off with Adam just to spite Cole. In all fairness, she
has been seriously hurt and has every right to be distrustful, but last
night went quite a bit too far in my book. Let's hope that after seeing
Cole's softer side, she'll lighten up a bit and truly move on.
Other Comments
I so LOVED Cole last night. For the first time in a while, he seemed
truly human. A man in love with a woman, but fully understanding that he
has a long way to go before he can win her back. He was compassionate
and extremely understanding of her behavior. It was the Cole I fell for
nearly a year ago, and the man that deserves to be happy.
Question to the readers: Is the Wizard of Oz a fairy tale? I never
thought of it as one, but I suppose it qualifies. Either way though, the
Ruby Red Slippers, following the 'I'm melting, I'm melting', was cute.
Piper is the luckiest pregnant woman ever! She doesn't have to worry
about scrapes, cuts, anything. She's got a built in whitelighter!
So after being dead for over 5 years, Grams gets a new look. I guess
she saw Paige's new hair, and decided that color was more her?
Personal Note:
Regretfully, this is my last week writing for Charmed. I've thoroughly
enjoyed the experience, but have found that my life outside ScoopMe is
making it too difficult for me to continue. Don't fret though, the
Charmed reviews will continue under the guidance of Lisa Eiseman. She is
the current reviewer for 7th Heaven, and I know you'll welcome her
opinions here as well. As for me, thank you for reading and keeping the
comments coming. I won't say goodbye, I'll just say, see you on the boards!
